The PROJECT

What is it about

aerial-view-container-cargo-ship

As Europe transitions towards a more sustainable economic model, embracing digital, green, and inclusive practices, port cities are undergoing significant transformations:

  • The modernisation and digitalisation of maritime industries
  • The redevelopment of waterfronts for coastal tourism, cultural heritage, creative industries, and green technology hubs
  • The decline of traditional port-based jobs
  • The new opportunities emerging in the Blue Economy
  • The transformation of former industrial areas into vibrant, sustainable urban districts that promote social inclusion and economic resilience

All these constitute complex challenges that port city areas must face and overcome.

PortAbility is a pioneering EU-funded project designed to empower these regions to manage this transition. We are placing Vocational Education and Training as a key driver for sustainable growth and social inclusion by addressing the evolving needs of port-related industries and equipping the local workforce with the skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

PortAbility aims to develop innovative strategies and methods for the economic diversification and reconversion of Port City Regions towards a Just Transition.

Within the four years of the project’s duration, PortAbility will:

  • Activate Vocational Excellence Centres
  • Strengthen labour market forecasting
  • Define skills for the just transition
  • Design upskilling & reskilling pathways
  • Promote social inclusion and innovation

Who is involved PortAbility aims to establish a CoVE that will engage and benefit all stakeholders involved in port city ecosystems. In order to achieve our key objective of social inclusion and be more effective in connecting project results with real-life challenges of port cities, we recognise civil society as a key stakeholder. For us, local communities, NGOs, citizen groups and associations, as well as end-users, are active parts and genuine contributors to social innovation and inclusive transition.
